how to make french fries
Step 1. Cut a potato into long strips. [1]
Step 2. Fry the potato strips in vegetable oil.
Step 3. Add salt and serve.
Seems simple enough, right? So where exacty do the wheat and dairy ingredients come in?
[1] (Tip: use extra-tasty Yukon Golds.)

I Shelly Hope This is a Yolk
My friend Laura sent this to me. I'm not sure why. Or where it's from. Or why.
ETA: Okay, I rewatched it and the very end disturbs me a bit...

Looking for an independent café nearby? Use the Starbucks Delocator to find one, or add your favorite to the database. (I was surprised to find that Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf is actually a transnational corporation. Learn something new every day!)

traditional irish snog
Mike came up with a tasty combo this weekend: Silk Nog and Bailey's Irish Cream. The best part is that if you squint when reading the labels you could consider it "good for you". For those of you who are recipe-impaired, here's a run-down:
8 oz. Silk Nog (the 'snog', aka soy nog)
1 oz. Bailey's Irish Cream (the "Irish", aka "what we had in the cabinet")
Blend until blended. Drink until drunk done.

Fair Brewing
It just so happens that I have a friend in the coffee and tea business. Better yet, they do fair trade, organic coffee and tea. Plus, I've got a can of their coffee beans sitting on my desk that I get to sniff at regular intervals. Yum!
Don't you wish you were me? Well, you can be! Check out Taylor Maid Farms
Either that, or we can check out their store in Sebastopol someday . . .
[Ed note: Scripps alums among us might note the use of a La Semeuse-type figure for their logo.]

Sweet, sweet candy
Ever wonder what evaporated cane juice really is? (If you've never seen the term before, it's generally listed in the ingredients of natural foods instead of sugar.) I originally thought, "Wait a minute... that's just sugar!" Kind of, but most sugar isn't vegan because of the way it's processed. So it's not as different as stevia, but it's still something to watch for.
(Sorry, these things cross my mind when I'm drinking tea.)

Gypsy tea makes me happy
It's fair trade, organic tea blended by a single mother in Ojai who gives workshops to women about starting their own businesses. And it's yummy.
