a two-hour park

The artsy folks at Rebar recently converted a 2-hour parking space in San Francisco into a temporary urban park complete with grass, tree, and park bench. The reason:

One of the more critical issues facing outdoor urban human habitat is the increasing paucity of space for humans to rest, relax, or just do nothing.

For example, more than 70% of San Francisco's downtown outdoor space is dedicated to the private vehicle, while only a fraction of that space is allocated to the public realm.

Sounds good to me. I'll be sure to put some change in the meter if I happen past one of these.

amazing century-old color photos

The Library of Congress is running an exhibit of color photographs from the 1900s reconstructed from three-color glass plates taken by a Russian experimental photographer. The process is fascinating, but the photos themselves are truly extraordinary. My favorite is "View of the Nilova Monastery", which looks like more a fairytale castle photo from a 1960s Disney adventure film than pre-revolution Russia.

[Thanks to Patrick for pointing this out to me.]

craft blog with a geeky twist

I know Karen will like this: Make, the blog/zine about making keen stuff, has just started up a craft sub-blog to focus on craft projects with a geeky edge.

Benjamin Healy

I heard the most wonderful thing on Fafblog today. Jeff Coleman has turned a great ol' rambling post into a great ol' rambling song and posted same for the world to hear.

Could be important

This is for anyone interested in gay square dancing. I came across it and felt that I had to make it known, just in case.

butterfly time

Walking to work this morning I saw a profusion of butterflies, flurries of them. From a distance they looked like leaves carried on the breeze, but as they fluttered past (so fast!) it was obvious they were on a mission. I think they were painted ladies flying their hearts out toward the desert and its new flowers.

Happy spring, everyone!

forêt des morts

If I were to be buried, Capsula Mundi would be my choice of venue. Hopefully it will be commonplace in a hundred years.

Does this remind anyone else of the Piggies?

All-Natural Art

Hey, kids. I came across the work of Andy Goldsworthy in a magazine and decided that you guys would love to see it. He interacts with nature to make beautiful, non-damaging art and the results are really lovely.

This interesting art project sounds like the kind of thing I used to do with my 1972 World Book encyclopedia. It's fun to take a random idea and riff on it by following links.
